Bending the Blues

Bending (that is, lowering a note by changing the shape of your mouth and tongue) is both the hardest and the most important harmonica technique. A good “bender” can add up to 16 new bent notes to a standard ten hole harp! This 64 page book and 90 min. tape (for “C”, “A”, or “F” harps) will teach total beginners to start bending right away. It’ll teach intermediate/advanced players to use draw bends, blow bends, and overblows in a variety of styles, scales, licks, and positions.
Now Featuring: Overblow Section
(BEND-B) Bending the Blues Book $5.95
(BEND-C) Bending the Blues 90 min cassette $9.95
(BEND-BC) Bending the Book and Tape $12.95

Note to Serious Beginners: It's never to early to start learning to bend, if you want to play the blues!

Music Theory Made Easy for Blues/Rock Harp

It’s a complete music theory book for blues harmonica, so it’s essential if you really want to play with others, or for those who want to know why they're doing what they do. It's also a complete explanation of that mysterious harmonica technique/theory/wierdness known as "harmonica positions."

With this book, you'll know which key harp to use when (includes charts to bring to that jamm session), how to talk with other musicians, jamming etiquette, and how to play in every position! Whatever your playing level, you’ll be playing in new positions in minutes — with hundreds of easy-to-read HarpTab™ scales and riffs at difficulty levels ranging from near-beginner to serious pro!
(MTfH) Music Theory for Harmonica: 96 pages, $6.95

Interested in this subject but prefer listening to reading? Try the 90 minute “Positions” cassette. It’s clear but a bit funky (like Volume Two of IBH), for the key of “A” harp, and covers the five most important harmonica positions. Comes with a five page booklet.
(POS) Positions Tape: $9.95

Instant Chromatic Harmonica:
The Blues/Jazz Improvisation Method

"Chromatic" harmonicas are larger than "regular" harps, more expensive, and have a "slide button" on one side. The slide button, when pushed in, serves a similar function to "bending." Chros are often used to play jazz or pop, with Toots Thielemans and Stevie Wonder being among the best and best-known chro artists.

It’s actually easier for beginners to play great sounding blues in the style of Little Walter on “chro” than on the 10 hole. The holes are bigger, good tone comes easier, and bending isn’t necessary. This full sized 112 page book and the 90 minute tape start off with Little Walter style, then go on to discuss the more complex styles of Stevie Wonder and Toots Thielemans. All of the licks and solos are written out in notation that’s no harder to read than our usual 10 hole notation system. If you’ve always been scared to try Chro, you owe it to yourself to try this method for an hour or so – you’ll be amazed at how easy it is!
(CHRO-B) Instant Chromatic 112 page book $12.95
(CHRO-C) Instant Chromatic Cassette $9.95
(CHRO-BC) Instant Chromatic Book & Cassette $19.95

Instant Blues Harmonica Volume Two

Volume Two is our oldest unrevised product (1982). We've tried to take it out of print, but in spite of its low-rent look it has quite a following! It's quirky, idiosyncratic, adn features some riffs and solos for advanced beginners that are found no where else.

Bending is introduced (but we also recommend using Bending The Blues along with Vol. Two), as are harmonica "positions," and lots of great riffs and backing music to play with (for “A” harp)!
(V2) Vol 2 Book, Cassette & Blues Key Finder® $12.95

The “Juke” Audiotape

I’ve found that many of my blues harp students, beginner to advanced, get great benefits by working on a single great harp solo. It helps their bending, timing, “blues sense,” — everything! So here’s a note-by-note, bend-by-bend, verse by verse explanation of Little Walters greatest song Juke*. Using this tape will be like my coaching you in person through this famous song! My voice over instructions tell you exactly what, when and how to play. Any level of student can use this product, even if they can’t do everything on the tape...Yet!
